Structural Analysis of Hunan Zhaochun ZC-5.0T EDI Membrane Stack
Ingenious Plate-and-Frame Structural Design | Full Analysis of the Internal Structure of Hunan Zhaochun ZC-5.0T EDI Membrane Stack
In ultrapure water production systems, the EDI membrane stack is the core desalination unit, and its structural design directly determines equipment operational stability, desalination efficiency, and service life. The ZC-series EDI membrane stacks independently developed and produced by Hunan Zhaochun Technology Co., Ltd. adopt the industry's mature and reliable plate-and-frame stacked integrated structure, optimized and upgraded with reference to Siemens' imported EDI architecture, offering multiple advantages of stable water production, low internal resistance, easy maintenance, and high cost-effectiveness. They can fully replace imported EDI membrane stacks of the same specifications and are widely suitable for pure water applications in photovoltaics, pharmaceuticals, laboratories, boiler feedwater, and more.
Zhaochun ZC-series plate-and-frame EDI uses a layered stacking assembly process, with electrode plates, electrode frames, ion exchange membranes, fresh water spacers, concentrate spacers, sealing gaskets, and compression end plates stacked in parallel in a fixed sequence, locked together with high-strength bolts to form a standard rectangular modular appearance.
Unlike spiral-wound EDI, the plate-and-frame structure features independently layered functional chambers with highly visible flow channels, making later disassembly, maintenance, resin replacement, and membrane cleaning convenient. Failure of a single chamber does not require scrapping the whole unit, greatly reducing operation and maintenance costs.
The outermost part of the membrane stack is equipped with thickened aluminum alloy compression end plates, paired with national-standard high-strength anti-corrosion bolts for even pressure application; the factory water pressure test withstands 6 bar without leakage. The end plates feature standardized water and electrical connection ports, directly compatible with most EDI power supplies and piping systems on the market. Retrofitting old and new imported equipment requires no changes to piping layout, and it is compatible with all Siemens IONPURE installation dimensions.
The overall compression structure bears force evenly, and long-term operation does not cause spacer deformation, membrane displacement, or corner water leakage.
The two innermost layers of the membrane stack are the anode chamber and cathode chamber, composed of ruthenium-plated titanium electrode plates and dedicated electrode frames:
1. The electrode plates use a titanium substrate with ruthenium-iridium coating, resistant to electrochemical corrosion, reducing anodic oxidation and cathode plate burnout failures;
2. The electrode frames feature an independent flow channel design, with electrode water and concentrate merging, suitable for various pretreatment water qualities;
3. The electrode water chambers are filled with dedicated ratio conductive resin, reducing internal resistance in the electrode region, mitigating scaling and dry-burn risks in the anode chamber, and suppressing gas accumulation at the electrodes.
The fresh water chamber is the core water production unit, sandwiched between anion and cation membranes. The ZC-series EDI is standardized with precisely proportioned mixed anion-cation ion exchange resin:
- The spacers use food-grade PE porous flow-conduction structures, with uniform water distribution and no dead zones, avoiding blockage caused by excessive local pressure differences;
