Ningbo Kerun Bio Signs Annual 4,000-Ton DHA Algae Oil Project with Hecreatia
Dual Engines Driving, Gathering Momentum: NK Bio and Heatan Chuangwu Officially Sign 4,000 Tons/Year DHA Algae Oil Project
Recently, at a biomanufacturing technology achievement promotion and technology demand matchmaking event held in Shizuishan City, Ningxia Zhongke Biotechnology Co., Ltd. ("NK Bio") and Qingdao Heatan Chuangwu Technology Co., Ltd. ("Heatan Chuangwu") officially signed a cooperation agreement. The two parties will jointly establish a joint venture with Hainan Haizhiyuan Life Technology Co., Ltd. ("Haizhiyuan") to advance the first-phase new construction project of 4,000 tons per year of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), laying the foundation for future larger-scale DHA and EPA projects. This cooperation marks a key step for NK Bio in the application of long-chain organic acids to the high-end nutrition and health ingredients industry.
Leveraging cutting-edge synthetic biology technology and combining Shizuishan City's abundant energy and industrial resource advantages, NK Bio will work with excellent partners to lay out a high-value-added biomanufacturing industrial chain, helping upgrade the quality of Ningxia's biomanufacturing industry.
The project adopts a joint venture operation model. Heatan Chuangwu will contribute its independently developed patented engineered strains, high-density heterotrophic fermentation technology, and other core synthetic biology technologies, taking full responsibility for strain optimization and production process implementation. NK Bio will leverage its local industrial foundation and synthetic biomanufacturing platform advantages to provide full-chain support including stable raw material supply and industrialization experience. Haizhiyuan will leverage its strengths in market development, particularly in overseas customer expansion.
The project plans to build a Schizochytrium DHA algae oil production line, with an expected annual output of 4,000 tons of DHA algae oil upon completion, along with by-product EPA oils. The products can be widely used in multiple high-growth fields such as infant complementary foods, health foods, and livestock and poultry feed additives. Currently, preliminary project construction has been fully launched. This 4,000 tons/year DHA algae oil project is Phase I and represents an important starting point in the company's layout of the high-end nutrition and health ingredients industry. Based on the technological and market validation of Phase I, the company has reserved ample development space and resource channels, laying a solid foundation for subsequent phased capacity release and large-scale expansion, with production expected to start by the end of this year.
NK Bio Deputy General Manager Li Zhongfu stated: "In 2025, Heatan Chuangwu conducted DHA project trials on our No. 1 pilot platform, and the overall validation results met expectations, ultimately leading to this cooperation. This achievement also validates the practical capabilities of our pilot platform." Building on this successful experience, NK Bio is accelerating the construction of the No. 2 pilot platform. With a total area of 3,119.94 square meters, the platform is equipped with four sets of 10-ton fermentation tanks and complete experimental equipment including filter presses, membrane separation, and crystallization drying, along with a standardized food-grade laboratory featuring 27 high-precision testing instruments (sets) such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and ion chromatography. It has launched a LIMS laboratory information management system and possesses comprehensive testing capabilities for microbiological and physicochemical indicators. The platform will be completed and put into operation in August this year and is now open to various pilot projects and equipment. Notably, the No. 2 platform introduces AI digital bio-empowerment technology, which can efficiently optimize synthetic biology enzyme engineering design and modification, microbial metabolic pathways, and more, with an expected 40% to 60% improvement in R&D efficiency.
The completion of NK Bio's No. 2 pilot platform will further enhance Shizuishan City's capacity for biotechnology achievement transformation, building an integrated R&D system of "technology development—bench testing—pilot testing—industrialization," with applications covering biochemical raw materials, food, pharmaceuticals, and other fields.
As a key local enterprise in biomanufacturing, NK Bio will continue to promote the industrialization of technological achievements, continuously improve the industrial ecosystem, and inject new momentum into high-quality regional economic development.
