The New OPTIMASS 5400: Compact, Lightweight, and Cost-Effective
KROHNE has launched the OPTIMASS 5400 — a new Coriolis mass flowmeter designed for standard gas and liquid process applications. The device offers an outstanding balance of performance, reliability and cost-effectiveness.
The OPTIMASS 5400 is suitable for a wide range of industries, including chemicals, oil and gas, marine, food and beverage, and pharmaceuticals, meeting the requirements of various flow measurement tasks. Typical applications include flow control of chemicals and hydrocarbons, utility measurement and fuel consumption monitoring. Thanks to its compact design, the flowmeter is also particularly suitable for mobile and skid-mounted systems, trucks, rail tank cars and portable process installations.
The OPTIMASS 5400 was developed in response to the growing demand for cost-effective instrumentation, filling the gap between entry-level and high-end Coriolis flowmeters. In addition to directly measuring mass flow, density and temperature, it also provides important information such as volume flow, concentration and flow velocity.
This dual half-bend tube flowmeter delivers high-performance measurement across a wide operating range. It easily handles process temperatures up to +180 °C and pressures up to 100 barg, while the sensor housing withstands a typical burst pressure of up to 200 barg, providing an additional protective barrier for enhanced plant safety. The device also features excellent mass flow and density measurement accuracy; for flows above 10% of the rated flow, an optional mass flow accuracy of ±0.1% is available.
The OPTIMASS 5400 is based on an innovative, modular production and supply system. Processes at every stage of meter production can be optimized, significantly shortening delivery times. KROHNE aims to achieve a long-term target of two-week delivery for standard configurations. The OPTIMASS 5400 also features a lightweight, environmentally friendly design, requiring significantly fewer materials and components compared to the previous generation of Coriolis flowmeters.
The OPTIMASS 5400 is equipped with the Entrained Gas Management (EGM™) system, enabling stable measurement over a wide range of gas fractions and under complex flow conditions. This technology also provides two-phase flow indication and supports the detection of gas volume content in liquids.
The flowmeter series features modular electronics and supports multiple communication protocols, such as HART® 7, Modbus, FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus, PROFIBUS-PA/DP, PROFINET, PROFINET over Ethernet-APL and EtherNet/IP™. Three configurable 4…20 mA outputs are provided, and Bluetooth® connectivity for wireless communication is integrated.
In addition, the integrated OPTICHECK diagnostic function continuously monitors device status and application conditions, giving operators detailed insight into the meter and the process, and supporting condition-based maintenance and process optimization. The flowmeter can also be verified on-site without interrupting the process, helping to reduce maintenance effort and increase plant availability.
When combined with the OPTICHECK Flow mobile app, the OPTIMASS 5400 can be conveniently and securely commissioned, monitored and verified in the field via Bluetooth communication. The OPTICHECK DTM is also available for remote access from the control room.
The OPTIMASS 5400 is available in compact and remote versions; its flange-to-flace dimensions match those of the OPTIMASS 1000 series, allowing easy replacement.
