Danaher Launches AI Self-Driving Lab
On October 7, Danaher Corporation announced plans to launch its first AI autonomous laboratory, enabling researchers to develop custom antibodies and various molecular tools more quickly and efficiently.
The laboratory is expected to reach scaled operation in early 2027, integrating artificial intelligence, robotics, and leading technologies from multiple Danaher operating companies into a single interconnected workflow. This is the first step in a broader Danaher initiative aimed at building intelligent instruments, integrated workflows, and autonomous laboratories to accelerate scientific research.
Faster speed: The discovery of affinity reagents can be accelerated up to 8-fold, helping researchers move faster from scientific concepts to innovative breakthroughs.
Greater scale: As the laboratory continues to expand, annual reagent development capacity is expected to increase 10-fold, from dozens to hundreds.
Higher quality: Every design in the laboratory will be validated and tested, with the results fed back to improve the next design, increasing speed without sacrificing scientific rigor.
Greater sustainability: In the long run, this approach is expected to complement traditional immunization methods for the discovery of antibodies and other research tools.
Julie Sawyer Montgomery, President and CEO of Danaher Corporation, said: 'This autonomous laboratory fully embodies Danaher's unique value. By leveraging our expertise in science and technology, along with our culture of continuous improvement, we can help turn promising ideas into validated systems more quickly. This is an important step toward a future in which AI, automation, and intelligent systems will dramatically accelerate the path from discovery to impact.'
The laboratory is housed at Danaher operating company Abcam, using AI to help create new affinity reagents, including antibodies, then manufacturing and testing each reagent, and feeding every result back into the model to improve the next round of design.
The laboratory integrates leading technologies and expertise from multiple Danaher operating companies into a single interconnected workflow, including Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, Cytiva, Genedata, IDT, Molecular Devices, and more. Instrument orchestration and robotic automation come from a partnership with Automata*.
This continuous 'design–build–test–learn' cycle can significantly shorten R&D timelines while maintaining scientific rigor. It applies Danaher's long-standing operational management philosophy of continuous improvement, including principles of testing and validation, to an AI-enabled laboratory environment. The laboratory will serve as an early example of how Danaher accelerates scientific discovery and medical advancement through intelligent instruments, AI-ready data, and expert-level agentic systems.
Jose-Carlos Gutierrez-Ramos, Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of Danaher, said: 'This laboratory represents a fundamentally new model of scientific discovery, in which AI, automation, and human expertise work together in a continuously learning loop. Speed is the key driver that accelerates this loop. Every result makes the next design more precise, so the faster each cycle runs, the faster scientific discovery becomes. The laboratory is designed to speed up the path from concept to validated reagent by up to 8-fold and increase reagent production by up to 10-fold, while ensuring that critical decisions are still made by scientists. This allows scientists to focus more on the complex scientific challenges that most require human insight.'
The laboratory is part of a broader Danaher initiative to build a series of intelligent instruments that are easier to integrate and control programmatically, generate AI-ready data, and are equipped with expert-level agentic systems to streamline operations, improve data quality, and generate deeper insights.
