Jintan Achieves Breakthrough in Industrial Reuse of Reclaimed Water at 500-600 t/d for Thermal Power Plant
The water authority of Jintan District, Changzhou, reports that Jiayi Thermal Power and the district industrial wastewater treatment plant have commissioned a cross-plant reclaimed water transfer scheme, marking the district's first industrial reuse of reclaimed water. Since start-up in May 2026 the system has run stably at 500-600 t/d, with 9,400 tonnes reused to date.
In 2026, Jiangsu Jiayi Thermal Power Co., Ltd. in Jintan District, Changzhou, jointly delivered a cross-plant reclaimed water transfer scheme with the Jintan District Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant, achieving the district's first industrial reuse of reclaimed water and easing pressure on regional water supply while freeing up water resources for water-intensive industries.
Jiayi Thermal Power generates power, steam, industrial water, compressed air and ash, with an installed capacity of 36 MW and heating capacity of up to 400 t/h. Its cooling system make-up previously relied entirely on surface water from the Danjin-Licao River, consuming close to 10,000 m³ per day, making it a genuinely water-intensive operator.
The reclaimed water reuse project launched in 2026 comprised:
- approximately 385 m of new DN300 reclaimed water pipeline inside the Jiayi plant, together with pipe supports, anti-corrosion works, valves and instrumentation;
- an off-site transfer pipeline connecting to the reclaimed water treatment train at the Jintan District Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant, plus process commissioning.
Reclaimed water is piped from the treatment plant to the clear water tank of Jiayi's chemical water system, then pumped as cooling water to the generating units for heat exchange, and cooled through a natural-draught cooling tower before reuse.
Since entering service in May 2026, the scheme has operated stably with average daily reuse of 500-600 tonnes and cumulative reuse of 9,400 tonnes, securing a stable outlet for reclaimed water from the district's industrial wastewater treatment plant.
The district water authority said it will build on the project to further tap unconventional (reclaimed) water resources for industrial users, establishing a full-chain circular water system and shifting water-use practice from "take, use and discharge" toward "multiple use and cascaded use".
