Urumqi Ganquanpu Zone Wastewater Reuse Project Commissioning: 50000 m3/d High-Salinity Tailwater into Reclaimed Water and Industrial Salt
The Urumqi Ganquanpu Economic and Technological Development Zone wastewater reuse project represents total investment of RMB 739 million and is currently in commissioning and trial operation. A precision membrane train produces high-purity reclaimed water for recirculation by park tenants, while the concentrate stream is further processed into compliant industrial salt, enabling full recovery of both water and waste salt.
At the Urumqi Ganquanpu Economic and Technological Development Zone wastewater reuse site, freshly packaged batches of industrial salt are ready for dispatch to a large chemical enterprise in Xinjiang for use as production feedstock. This is the second life of the wastewater after membrane screening and crystallisation. Before that, most of the water had already been converted into high-purity reclaimed water by a precision membrane system and returned to park enterprises for recirculation.
The project represents a total investment of RMB 739 million. It is developed by Xinjiang Derun Zhongjian Water Resources Development and operated by China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Green Industry Investment. Now in commissioning and trial operation, it will treat 50,000 m3/d of high-salinity industrial tailwater once fully online.
Treatment begins with pretreatment. Wastewater collected from all enterprises across the zone flows into the pretreatment workshop, where precisely dosed chemicals cause suspended impurities and pollutants to flocculate and settle rapidly. According to the operations process manager, concentrate separated by the dual-membrane system carries high salt and impurity content with strong colour; if sludge settles and the water clears within five minutes, the dosing ratio is on specification. Despite its turbid appearance, the concentrate becomes clear downstream.
After primary purification the stream is split: water that meets preliminary standards moves on, while concentrate enters advanced treatment. Staged purification and recirculated concentration maximise water recovery while cutting the energy consumption of downstream salt evaporation units, improving both efficiency and energy performance. One side yields clear reusable reclaimed water, the other compliant industrial salt, breaking with the traditional model of discharging wastewater once it merely meets standards.
